Endearing and playful, the baby hippopotamus spends its first weeks nestled against its mother, often in the water. At birth, it already weighs several tens of kilos, but remains vulnerable and dependent on the herd's protection.
Very quickly, it learns to swim and dive, keeping only its eyes, nostrils, and ears out of the water, like adults. Surprisingly, baby hippos nurse underwater thanks to a special adaptation that allows them to close their nostrils and remain submerged without difficulty. Protected by its mother, it gradually learns about aquatic life and feeding on fresh grass at dusk.
This Papo figurine tenderly recreates the baby hippopotamus: a round silhouette, wrinkled skin, and a mischievous attitude. An ideal model to complete a collection of wild animals, invent stories on the banks of African rivers, or introduce children to the fascinating life of this semi-aquatic giant.
