Founded in Jerusalem in 1128, the Teutonic Order is the third great order of religious and military chivalry to emerge from the Crusades. The first knights of this order were called Brothers of St. Mary and their primary vocation was to relieve sick or wounded Crusaders, before being reorganized as a military order in 1190. This renewal subjected the knights to both the rule of the Hospitallers and that of the Templars.
