The African elephant is currently the largest land animal, reaching up to 4m in height and weighing around 7 tonnes. It lives mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in northern South Africa. This mammal is easily recognizable by its long ivory tusks, which alone can weigh up to 100kg, and its trunk, which it uses for feeding. Unlike its cousin, the Asian elephant, it has larger ears, less hair, and a more rounded back. The species is currently in decline due to poaching and the progressive destruction of its habitat.
